The three upperclass crews have been rowing regularly on the river since the first of last week, and are now under the direction of their respective graduate coaches, J. Lawrence '01, H. Bancroft '97, and J. F. Perkins '99. All three crews have established training tables and hard work will begin at once for the class race, which is only a little over two weeks off.
The Law School crew began rowing last Wednesday with exceptionally good material. The men are all experienced oarsmen and will make a fast crew if they can get together in the short time that remains before the race. Two of the men--Howe and Auchincloss--have rowed on Yale crews, the latter having pulled number three on last year's four-oared crew, which, for the first time in years, defeated the Harvard four.
The men in the second and third crews of the three upper classes, together with the "class" Freshmen, have been divided between the Weld and the Newell in order to organize crews for the usual club class races. All but the Newell Seniors have formed provisional eights and they will probably organize a crew this afternoon.
The work of the Freshman squad for the last few days has been rather light, on account of the unsuitable barges at their disposal. This condition will, however, be remedied this week for the University crews are to row in shells and the barges they have been using will be handed over to the Freshmen. The first cut in the Freshman squad was made yesterday, when the fourth eight was divided between the Weld and Newell clubs.
The "John Harvard" is in commission and will follow the crews this afternoon.
Following are the present orders of the four crews that will enter the class championship race:
