OPEN PRACTICE TODAY

Open practice will be held by the University football team for a short time this afternoon. The gates will be thrown open at 3.35 o'clock and after one short half will be closed again.

To call to mind a poorer practice than that of the University football team yesterday would be a most difficult task. Not since the start of the season has a more spiritless or unsatisfactory exhibition occurred; and in view of the close proximity of an important contest, the showing was certainly disquieting. The whole team was remarkably slow, there was practically no interference, and but for the extreme weakness of the second eleven, whose frequent fumbles thwarted any attempts at effectual offensive work on their part, defeat would have been hard to avert. As it was, in a line-up which lasted twenty minutes, the first team was twice held for downs, lost the ball on a fumble, and could score only once on straight plays. Another touchdown was made, but it was due to one of the second team's fumbles on which a member of the first team secured the ball and easily carried it to the goal.

The only favorable feature of the practice was Stillman's punting. He made several kick's about 60 yards in length. Knowlton also did some good work in advancing the ball. The team was again composed largely of substitutes, as Bowditch, Jones, A. Marshall, Kernan and Graydon did not play. The squad of coaches numbered twelve and was as follows: F. D. Cochrane '99, J. After the first touchdown, which was made by Harrison on a fumble a short time after the scrimmage began, the second team returned Stillman's punt to the first team's 40 yard line, from where Marshall ran the ball in to mid-field. It was then advanced to the 25 yard line and lost on downs. The second punted, regained the ball on a fumble, and sent Fox through the line twice for gains of 15 yards each. The ball again changed hands on downs, however, and after an exchange of punts, the first eleven secured the ball on the second team's 40 yard line and on short line plays forced it over for a touchdown.
