The practice of the University football squad yesterday afternoon was somewhat ragged and the men played less consistently good ball than they have for the past week.
After the preliminary work the first and second elevens lined up for a regular game of two seven minute halves. For the first time this season the scrimmage resulted in a score. The first team made two touchdowns, both in the second period. Mills blocked a punt and Meier fell on the ball for the first team on the second's 3-yard line. After a slight gain by Mills, Nichols in the next play went over the line just outside right guard for a touchdown. Noyes kicked the goal. The second score was made at the close of the half, by Mills on a mass play through the line.
Several important changes were made in the line-up of the teams. Parker, who has been playing regularly at centre on the second was moved to left guard on the first; and Squires, who was substitute tackle on last year's eleven and who has been playing right tackle this season, was tried at right guard. White, who is another candidate for guard, was put in at centre on the second.
The punting during the scrimmage was rather poor. Kernan, who previously has showed up well in this department, was slow in getting off his kicks and failed to secure distance. The work of handling punts was also unsatisfactory, as several inexcusable fumbles were made. The first team was once penalized for offside play and the second once held for downs.
J. Parkinson '06, regular centre on last year's eleven, reported yesterday afternoon for the first time, but did not engage in the scrimmage. C. G. Osborne '07, a promising candidate for halfback, who has been out of the game the past week owing to an injury, was again on the field.
The line-up: The following graduates were on the field assisting Coach Wrightington in his work: F. D. Cochrane '99, R. W. P. Brown '98, C. B. Marshall '04, R. P. Kernan '03, J. S. Lawrence '01, D. W. Knowlton '03, and G. A. Gray '94.
