The Harvard Team.

On Monday September 19, about forty men reported for early football practice. This number was soon increased by the arrival of numerous candidates, so that at the opening of College a large squad was in the field. Of last year's team, Hurley, Mills, Nicholas, Derby, Squires, and Meier came out and later Parkinson joined the squad. The first game of the season, with Williams, resulted in an easy victory, the University eleven making twenty-four points in shorthalves. the play was necessarily some what crude, but individual work was good, and the game was full of dash and spirit. The game with Maine, although resulting in a victory for the University, emphasized the fact that the line was not only strong and heavy, but also slow. the Maine eleven, but getting the start of the Harvard team, gained first down ten times. Against West Point, however, the work of the Harvard team was better. the defense was solid; the offense, at times, powerful.

Shortly after this game, secret practice began. The work of the coaches was hampered considerably by the fact that many of the men were laid up with slight injuries. Considerable improvement was made, nevertheless. The Carlisle game last Saturday was satisfactory in many ways. The line proved strong, and, backed up by an excellent secondary defense, was able, in most cases, to break up the Indians puzzling plays.

The coaches have been paying special attention to developing a punter. The team has been weak in this department all through the season, but now, after a week of diligent coaching, several men of fair ability have been developed.

The eleven, at present, is undoubtedly stronger than at any time during the past season. It has recovered entirely from its unprogressive period of a short time ago, and has since been going forward rapidly.
