Nine graded crews, four from the Weld and five from the Newell, are now rowing every afternoon in preparation for the fall graded races, which will be rowed up-stream from the Union Boat Club to Longwood Bridge on November 2. The work of all these crews is still crude, most of the men having the usual faults of rushing their slides and hanging back at the finish. The Weld crews are being coached by Rice and those at the Newell by Vail and M. R. Brownell 3L.
About 64 candidates for the Freshman crew have been at work since last Monday at the University boathouse, under the direction of J. P. Bowditch '05, and G. Fairchild 1L. The work has necessarily been of a very elementary character, consisting of rowing on the machines with stationary seats. No attempt has as yet been made to grade the men. There will be no practice today, but on Monday a slight cut will be made in the squad, and the remainder will commence work on the river in barges. The average weight of the squad is somewhat less than that of the Freshman squad last fall.
The graded crews went out yesterday in the following order:
First Weld--stroke, Shepard; 7, Burchard; 6, Pleasonton; 5, Gill; 4, McCloud; 3, Judd; 2, French; bow, Johnson; cox., Borden.
Second Weld--stroke, Field; 7, Corlett; 6, Joy; 5, Joralemon; 4, MacIntyre; 3, Sherwin; 2, Whitney; bow, Williams; cox., de Milhau.

Fourth Weld--stroke, Cate; 7, Stackpole; 6, Smith; 5, Foss; 4, Strauss; 3, Bailey; 2, Wright; bow, Griswold; cox., MacColl.
First Newell--stroke, Farley; 7, Durfee; 6, Bacon; 5, Kellogg; 4, White; 3, Richards; 2, Switzer; bow, Swaim; cox., Wiener.
Second Newell--stroke, Lamson; 7, Olney; 6, Goodale; 5, Moller; 4, Shepard; 3, Tappan; 2, Gregg; bow, Hopkins; cox., Ogilby.
Third Newell--stroke, Webster; 7, Cabot; 6, Richmond; 5, Holmes; 4, Davis; 3, Nash; 2, Waite; bow, Wiswall; cox., Bonelli.
