The first of the courses of public lectures before the University provided for by the gift of Mr. Gardiner M. Lane '81, will be given next year by Dr. S. H. Butcher, Professor of Greek in the University of Edinburgh. His subject to be later more definitely announced, will be some topic in connection with Greek literature and history. Professor Butcher, who was formerly Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, is widely known in this country through his writings. These include a series of essays entitled "Some Aspects of the Greek Genius," "Aristotle's Theory of Poetry and Fine Art," and the prose translation of the Odyssey which he made with Andrew lang. Recently he has been a member of the important commission engaged in preparing a plan for the development of the higher education in Ireland.
