Freshman Baseball Team.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Freshman baseball team is now beginning to take definite shape. Throughout the season the men have shown commendable spirit and have worked hard, but considerable improvement will still be necessary in order to make a creditable showing in the Yale game.

At second base, Leonard who has been appointed temporary captain, is improving steadily, especially in batting. J. F. Burns, the other candidate for the position, is generally slow, though his base-running is fair. L. Grant is covering third base well both in handling short bunts and fast hits. At bat he bunts well, but has a tendency to hit high balls. Nichols at first base is a hard worker and covers a good deal of ground on foul flies. He has, however, fallen off in his batting within the last two weeks. Spencer, who is trying for centre field, is slow in starting and does not cover much ground. A lack of confidence is his most serious drawback at bat. His base-running, though fast, is careless. Gallagher, substitute for centre field, covers a good deal of ground, has a quick accurate throw, but is nervous at the bat. Bradbury is playing a consistently fast game at shortstop, but his batting and base-running are only fair. Garceau, who is also trying for the same position, is rather irregular in his playing. Of the catchers, Quigley has a fast throw and is improving in judgment. He is, however, careless at bat and reckless in base-running. Hellman, thought handicapped by an injury earlier in the season, is now improving consistently. Newhall, in left field, throws well, but plays a slow game. His batting and base-running are irregular. Sperry, the other candidate for this position, is a sure fielder. He is, however, weak at bat, and runs bases clumsily. Greenough covers more ground at right field than any of the other fielders, and gets his throws off quickly. His batting is weak. Peters is irregular in his playing and is weak at bat. Of the three men trying for pitcher--Castle, Taylor and T. F. Burns--Castle has the best control. His judgment and fielding are also better than either of the other two. Taylor has good speed, but his curves, are not under control. Burns is wild, but shows up well at critical moments. All three are weak at the bat and careless in running bases.

FRESHMEN, 14; MANUAL TRAINING, 3.

The Freshman baseball nine in their first game defeated the Cambridge Manual Training School on Saturday, April 18, by the score of 14 to 3. In spite of the strong wind, the team played fairly well, although the men were, as might be expected, weak in batting, Nichols acted as temporary captain.

The score by innings:   1  2  3  4  5  6  7 Freshmen,  2  2  0  1  0  6  3--14 Training Sch.,  2  0  0  0  0  1  0--3

FRESHMEN, 15; MECHANIC ARTS H. S., 0.

Last Saturday the Freshman nine defeated the Mechanic Arts High School by the score of 15 to 0, in a lifeless and uninteresting game. The large score was due chiefly to errors by the high school team. The three Freshman pitchers did well at critical moments, but all the men showed a tendency to bat high flies.
