In the finals of the Massachusetts state tennis tournament yesterday afternoon, L. E. Ware '99 defeated W. J. Clothier '04 by the score 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. B. C. Wright '03, who won the championship last year, will defend his title to the challenge cup against Ware.
In the match yesterday Clothier played a hard game especially in the second set and showed improvement over his last year's form. Ware's playing, however, was more swift and consistent. Many of his cross court drives were brilliant and he showed excellent control in lobbing from the back court. The whole match was closely contested and was won chiefly through his smashing, but steady game.
In the unfinished match between Ware and K. Horton, Ware won 6-2, 6-4. In the semi-finals which were played in the morning, Ware defeated A. S. Pier '95, 6-1, 6-4 and W. J. Clothier '04 defeated H. I. Foster '98.
