The Newell crew was defeated by both the Syracuse second eight and the Cornell first junior crew yesterday afternoon in slow time over the two-mile course on Lake Cayuga at Ithaca.
At the start, the Newell crew at once took a spurt and jumped to the lead. It was soon a length ahead, and held this lead for a quarter of a mile. Before long, however, the high stroke of the Syracuse crew and Cornell's weight began to tell and the two crews gained gradually but steadily on the Newell eight finally passing them, and then Syracuse.
Cornell finished first in 10m., 48 1-2 s. Syracuse followed two lengths behind, and then came the Newell crew, over a length behind Syracuse.
The order of the Newell crew follows: Stroke, Boardman; 7, Swaim; 6, Henderson; 5, Haycock; 4, Foster; 3, Morris; 2, Stone; bow, Low; cox., Stokes.
