The Weld graded crews won the two races against the Newell yesterday. They seemed to have more drive and endurance than the Newell crews, although in watermanship they were fairly even. So far this year the Weld has been victorious in all the interclub races, and the two clubs will meet only once more, in the Metropolitan Regatta in the middle of June.
The first race, between the second and third crews of each club was rowed down stream from the Longwood Bridge at 6 o'clock. The positions, from the Beacon street wall, were as follows: Third Newell, Second Weld, Third Weld, Second Newell. At the start the Second Weld got the lead and kept it to the end. The Second Newell coxswain steered far over to the Cambridge shore, thereby losing much distance, and the coxswains of the two third crews also steered erratically. The second Weld won easily by a length and a half, followed by the Third Weld. The two Newell crews were a length further in the rear, with the Second Newell slightly in the lead.
The two first crews in each club got away at 6.30. The Newell crew led at the start, rowing more steadily, although the Weld was rowing a higher stroke. As the crews went under the bridge the Newell was slightly ahead, but on the other side, the Weld pulled up and slowly forged ahead. About a quarter of a mile from the finish the Weld spurted and led by a length, while the Newell seemed unable to make further effort. Near the line Boardman made a final effort but the crew failed to respond. The Weld finished a length and a half ahead. The time was 9 minutes, 58 seconds.
The orders of the first and second Weld crews were as follows:
First Weld--Stroke, Wolcott; 7, George; 6, Brooks; 5, Bent; 4, Greenough; 3, Richardson; 2, Roberts; bow, Dillingham; cox., Kelly.
Second Weld--Stroke, Macomber; 7, Lindsley; 6, Bleakie; 5, Hatch; 4, Minturn; 3, Ells; 2, May; bow, Sherbourne; cox., Schoff.
