About fifty candidates for the Freshman nine began work in the cage yesterday afternoon. The men were coached by Captain Wendell and A. Black '03, and were given practice in stopping grounders, followed by a short run of six laps around the cage. For the present the work will consist simply of infield practice, and practice in sliding to bases. In about two weeks the men will be given batting practice. All candidates for the team should report every day this week dressed to play, at 3.15. A. Black '03 will act as coach of the Freshman team while the men are at work in the cage.

Battery practice also began yesterday afternoon for all men trying for the position of pitcher or catcher on either the University or Freshman teams. About thirty men reported at the cage and were coached by Cy Young.
