AMHERST GAME TODAY.

The University football team will play the Amherst eleven on Soldiers Field this afternoon at 4 o'clock. This game should be particularly interesting as it will afford the first basis for comparison between the Yale and Harvard teams. Amherst met Yale at New Haven last Saturday and was defeated by a score of 23 to 0.

The Harvard team will be somewhat crippled this afternoon on account of the absence of Graydon and Kernan. A. Marshall, who played right guard in last Saturday's game with Bates, has a lame back and will be given a rest for a few days. Hovey will take his place. Graydon's injury is in his shoulder and though the trouble is not serious, he will not be used unless necessity demands it. Kernan's leg is practically well again but it has been thought best not to risk a strain until it has regained its strength. Bowditch is not in very good condition and will be played probably only during part of the game. As a whole, the Harvard team is undeveloped, with nothing to depend upon but weight, spirit and individual ability. No tricks or tackless back plays have yet been perfected and all the offensive work will be done by the simplest kind of end-running and line-plunging.

A large part of the time was taken up in kicking and catching punts in which the backs showed almost no improvement. The linemen were coached separately in breaking through and had much the same work under the graduate players as they had Monday. Playing too high has been the principal trouble with the forwards and they seem slow to realize the necessity for a change. A brief line-up between the University substitutes and the second eleven concluded the practice; it brought out but little good football.
