The challenge match for the tennis championship of the University was won yesterday afternoon by W. S. Warland '03, who defeated G. A. Lyon 2L., in three straight sets 6-0, 6-1, 6-4. Warland played a steady swift game, while Lyon's playing was below its usual standard, thereby making the match very uneven throughout. By hard, accurate volleying to the side lines, Warland continually passed Lyon both at the net and in the back court; Warland's service, too, was very effective, and frequently scored aces on Lyon's drives into the net.
The matches in doubles which were played yesterday resulted as follows: Larned and Larned defeated Drinkwater and George, 6-2, 6-3; Greenough and Sulloway defeated Blagden and Seabury, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3; Bishop and Lyon defeated E. S. Johnson and partner by default; Larned and Larned defeated Ives and Langmaid, 6-2, 9-7.
The matches in doubles which are yet to be played have not been definitely scheduled, but will probably be started on Monday. They are as follows: Boggs and Karr vs. Bishop and Lyon; Prentice and de Rham vs. winners of Boggs-Karr and Bishop-Lyon match; Greenough and Sulloway vs. winners of above match; Drake and Dana vs. Larned and Larned; finals between the winners of the last two matches.
