The library at the Union has been growing rapidly. The total number of volumes is at present 3800, an increase of 1000 since December 1. This number includes handsome editions of standard works, and a very complete reference library. One of the most important acquisitions is "The Harvard Book," a large work in two volumes, published by the class of 1874, and containing historical, biographical and descriptive sketches of Harvard, illustrated by views and portraits. This rare book is the gift of R. T. Edes '58.
The recent gift of 400 volumes from J. B. Gerrish '71 is by far the largest gift from an individual that the library has received. 100 volumes of French literature and drama have just been presented to the library by J. H. Hyde '98. The collection of University catalogues has been very nearly completed by the gift of 30 catalogues beginning as far back as 1825, received from Mrs. Frank Bolles of Cambridge.
The following University organizations have contributed money for the purchase of books: A. D. Club, Delta Phi Club, Phi Delta Psi Club, Porcellian Club, Hasty Pudding Club, Zeta Psi Club, Chicago Club, Memorial Society, Pi Eta Society, Kappa Gamma Chi Society, Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity, Delta Upsilon Fraternity, Signet, Musical Clubs, Advocate, Lampoon and CRIMSON.
Since the last list published the following graduates and members of the Faculty have contributed copies of their writings: Professor Hart, James, Palmer, Toy and Trowbridge; and M. S. Severance '69, R. Grant, '73, F. Hendrick '97, F. I. Carpenter '85, T. W. Balch '90, H.P. Chandler '64, W. P. P. Longfellow '55, E. F. Bliss '58. The following graduates have contributed books: T. W.
