Changes in the Faculty.

The resignation or absence of several members of the Faculty has caused a number of changes for the coming year.

Professor Asaph Hall, U. S. Navy, who has had a yearly appointment in Celestial Mechanics, has given up his position.

At least two new men will appear in the Department of Economics, to fill the vacancies caused by the absence of Professor Taussig on sabbatical leave, and the resignation of Professor W. J. Ashley, who has accepted the administrative professorship of the University of Birmingham. Professor Bullock of Williams and Professor A. Z. Ripley of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will be at Harvard during the present year.

Dr. Joseph Torrey, Jr., of the Department of Chemistry, has left Harvard and taken a position in the rubber works at Akron, Ohio.

Dr. R. A. Daly, instructor in Physiography, has resigned, and is now engaged in a survey of the border between Canada and the United States.

Dr. Prescott and Dr. McDaniel, of the Department of Classics, have gone to the University of California and the University of Pennsylvania, respectively. Their places will be taken by Dr. W. W. Baker and Dr. E. K. Rand '94.

Assistant Professor T. W. Richards, of the Department of Chemistry, was offered this summer a full professorship at the University of Gottingen, with a new laboratory built for his use. The position was perhaps the best ever offered from abroad to an American chemist, involving purely research work, with no class-room duties. Professor Richards, however, declined to leave Harvard.

The return of Professor Goodale will cause the withdrawal of Dr. R. H. True, who has been in the Botanical Department during Professor Goodale's absence.

Professor W. James and Professor M. Bocher have also returned and will resume their courses. Professor B. O. Pierce's leave of absence has been extended on account of his health.

Assistant Professor A. A. Howard has been appointed a full professor.

Mr. B. S. Hurlbut has been given an assistant professor in English, and Mr. J. L. Love has been appointed an assistant professor in Mathematics. Mr. A. Sauveur becomes an assistant professor of Metallurgy.

Other new appointments are those of Dr. M. A. Potter as instructor in Romance Languages, and Mr. J. A. Walz, as instructor in German.
