The nine lost a close and exciting game to Brown at Providence yesterday by a score of 4 to 3. The team's inability to hit Lynch with men on bases was the cause of the defeat, as the fielding and pitching were satisfactory. An error by Fincke gave Born one run, but the others were the result of hard hitting. Harvard, however, scattered here five bits, and got all the runs on errors. Poor base running lost Harvard one run and a failure to sacrifice at the right time lost another. The most inexcusable fault was the effort of most of the men to make long drives and their consequent inability to pick out good balls and place the hits.
Stillman was batted hard, as the three hits made from him were three-base hits. Clarkson, who took his place in the fifth, did well until the eighth inning, when he gave Brown three hits which netted two runs. Frantz did entirely too much swinging at the ball, and missed two good chances to bring in runs. Weldell had two hits, one a three base hit, but struck out in the ninth inning with a man on second base. The excellent fielding of Clark, Coolidge and Fincke, in spite of the disadvantage of playing on a hard clay diamond, was the only encouraging feature of Harvard's play.
Brown's first run, in the fourth inning, was made by Clark, who got a base on balls and scored on Fincke's failure to stop Penley's grounder. In the next inning Wheeler made a three-base hit and came home on Barry's long fly. The two last runs were made in the eight inning on singles by Barry and Clark and Whittemore's three-base hit.
Harvard scored first in the eighth inning on Wendell's three-base hit and Barry's wild throw to first. In the ninth inning George got to third on Lynch's wild throw to catch him at first. Then after two outs, Coolidge got to first on Gray's fumble, and both runners scored on Barry's muff of Clarkson's easy fly. Wendell then ended the game.
