WINTER BASEBALL TO BEGIN.

At last night's baseball meeting 108 men handed in their names as candidates for the University and class teams. Work in the cage will begin Monday and will consist for the present in throwing and batting practice. The men will be divided into four fquads,--the University squad, the battery candidates, the Freshmen, and a general squad.

The battery candidates, divided into squads according to the hours of their afternoon recitations, will be given light work between 2 and 2.30. The University squad, composed of last year's team and second team and a few other promising candidates, in all about forty men, will take the cage from 3.30 t 4. This squad will be reduced or increased according to the work of the candidates, so that everyone playing first-class baseball may be included. The general squad, consisting of upper class men who have not proved themselves worthy of positions on the University squad, will practice from 4 to 4.30. The Freshmen will be given the cage from 4.45 to 5.15. In preparation for the winter baseball work a new layer of earth has been put on the floor of the cage.

Dr. E. H. Nichols '86 will again act as head coach and will be assisted by B. H. Hayes '98. It is hoped that they will be able to watch the cage practice occasionally, but they will not begin regular work until the team gets outdoors. For the present the practice will be under the direction of Captain Reid, and Lewis of the Boston League team, who will give particular attention to the pitchers. In about two weeks Hamilton of the Boston team will begin coaching batting and base-running. The professionals will stay with the team until the end of the cage work. P. D. Haughton '99 will assist in coaching the infielders and W. H. Rand '98 will coach the outfielders.

A prize bat has been offered to the player reaching first base the greatest percentage of times in the regular games this spring.
