Last week was an important one in Yale football, as the final make-up of the eleven was then practically settled. This is possible thus early in the season, because Yale has just enough first-rate players to form a team, but lacks substitutes. This lack is the most serious difficulty of the season, as it is almost impossible for a team to play through the season without losing a few regular players for a short time at least. Another reason for such an early selection of the team is the fact that eight of the men are playing on the University eleven for the first time; and a long period of working together is necessary in order to make the team work run smoothly. The eleven selected is as follows: Gould and Rafferty, ends; Goss and Hogan, tackles; Olcott and Glass, guards: Holt, centre; de Saulles, quarterback; Hart and Chadwick, halfbacks; Wilhelmi, fullback.
The average weight of this line is 195 pounds, and as all the men are active for their weight, there is little doubt that a strong and vigorous line will develop. Neither Gould nor Rafferty are above the average ends, but are very reliable. De Saulles has recently developed unusual skill at quarter, and will fill the position excellently. Chadwick is the best ground gainer and is running in even better style than he did last year. Hart is not up to the standard, as he is slow in starting and uncertain in hitting the line. Wilhelmi is an excellent line plunger, but his absolute inability to punt successfully makes his hold on the position a little weak. So far no good punter has been found.
