THE FOOTBALL SQUAD.

The University football squad began practice at Soldiers field, Monday afternoon, September 18, with forty-five men. Since then the number of candidates has steadily increased until there are now nearly eighty men on the squad, a gain of twenty over last year. Besides B. H. Dibblee '99, head coach, W. C. Forbes '92, W. H. Lewis L. S. '95, J. L. Knox '98, R. B. Merriman '96, J. W. Farley '99 and other graduates have watched the practice.

There will be little difference in the handling of the men from the plan adopted last year. All but the most promising Freshmen will be sent down to the 1904 squad as soon as it begins work and other men not showing ability will be dropped towards the end of the week.

Special attention will be devoted this year to the development of kicking in view of which three cups have been offered for the best work in place kicking, drop kicking and punting.

Of the members of last years team who have retuned to practice are Captain Daly, Hallowell, Lawrence, Sawin and Ellis. E. H. Kendall returned yesterday and Campbell is expected later. Burnett has returned to College but will be prevented, temporarily at least, from playing on account of his studies. Reid is still incapacitated by his weak leg and will probably confine himself to directing the work of the fall baseball squad.

During the last week the work has been light. In the morning the routine has consisted in dumb-bell exercises, starts, falling on the ball and a short run, with kicking practice for the backs. The afternoon work has consisted in starts, falling on the ball, tackling the dummy, kicking for the backs and breaking through for the line men. This is followed by a run. Yesterday afternoon four elevens were formed, and the first three ran through signals in the following line-ups:

Season Tickets to the football games entitle the owner to (1)a seat in a specially reserved section at all home games except that with Pennsylvania and (2) the privilege of purchasing before the general sale, two reserved seats for the Pennsylvania game at Soldiers field on Nov. 3. Tickets to the Pennsylvania game will be assigned in the following order: First, undergraduate season ticket holders; second, undergraduates; third, graduate season ticket holders; fourth, graduates; fifth, general public season ticket holders; sixth, general public. Season tickets may be obtained of the Co-operative Society, Leavitt and Peirce, Amee Brothers and at the box office at the field on the afternoon of any game. In Boston they may be obtained at Wright and Ditson's, 344 Washington St. The price is $3.00.
