Harvard was defeated by Holy Cross yesterday in a well-fought game by the score of 3 to 2. The game was largely a pitcher's battle, and although Harvard secured the most hits, they did not come when hits meant runs. Both Stillman and Kernan were tried in the box, and did about equally well, though Kernan had hardly time to get well into the game, as he pitched but two innings. Jaynes was tried at first base during the early part of the game, and played a steady fielding game, though he proved weak at the bat:
In the first inning Loughlin got his base on balls, and was advanced to second on Fincke's single, after Jaynes had gone out on a liner to shortstop. A double steal put the runners on second and third, but the two succeeding batsmen were retired at first base. For Holy Cross, Connor got a base on balls, and overran second on Linnehan's grounder. He was caught between the bases, but reached third safely, Linnehan taking second. Connor was caught trying to score on Fox's attempt to bunt, Fox struck out, and the next batter went out on a fly ball.
Harvard scored her two runs in the fifth inning on a double by Loughlin, an infield out, and a long fly by Fincke. Clark was then hit by a pitched ball, advanced to third by Wendell's single, and came in by good base-running on a fumble of the return of the ball from the outfield.
Holy Cross scored in the sixth on an error, a sacrifice and a single, and again in the seventh on a three-base hit which passed Devens and a long fly.
With one out in the eighth, Devens and Coolidge singled, but were left on bases, Stillman striking out, and Milne going out at first. In the ninth, Kenney made a scratch hit to right, took second on a bunt which was poorly handled by Stillman, and came home on Clark's poor throw of McTigue's grounder.
