The Freshmen won the class baseball championship yesterday by defeating the Juniors, 12 to 4. For the first five innings the game was close and the lead alternated, but in the seventh inning the Juniors went to pieces. Neither team played well in the field, but the Freshmen outbatted their opponents. Clarkson pitched a brilliant game for six innings, striking out thirteen men and giving only two hits. Aside from Clarkson's work in the box and Clark's steady catching there was little good individual playing. The Freshmen as usual relied on Clarkson to win the game and when they had opportunities they usually missed them. The Juniors were as weak as the Freshmen in the field, making ten errors in all. Wheelock, McNamara and Hill all made costly errors. Laverack, although his pitching during the last five innings was poor, did the best work for the Juniors, fielding his position well and making a hit and two runs.
The Freshmen scored first in the second inning on an error by Kendall and Sherlock's single, but the Juniors took the lead in their half of the inning by scoring twice on a base on balls and two errors by Lovering. The Freshmen made two runs in the fourth on hits by Clarkson, Van Amringe and Lovering, and a few moments later the Juniors tied the score on Quincy's hit, and a series of errors by the Freshmen. In the next four innings the Freshmen made nine runs by hard hitting and by errors. The Juniors made their last run in the eighth on Wheelock's single and several errors.
