HARVARD WINS.

PHILADELPHIA, PA., May 21, '00.--Harvard defeated Pennsylvania in an exciting game this afternoon on Franklin Field by the score of 9 to 5. The fielding was loose on both sides, and both pitchers were hit rather freely. Stillman was replaced by Kernan in the middle of the eighth inning. The latter proved very effective, and the six succeeding batsmen were retired one after another. Harvard's hits were bunched very opportunely, and the base running was better than it has been of late.

Harvard secured a lead of four runs at the start, scoring two in the first inning on Kendall's single and Reid's home run. This was followed by two more in the second. Wendell reached first on an error, was advanced to third by Devens' two base hit, and both men scored on Stillman's timely hit. Pennsylvania was shut out till the fifth inning, when two errors by Coolidge, followed by a single by Shape scored one run. In the sixth each team scored one run, and in the next inning Pennsylvania tied the score, making three runs on hits by Collier and Shape, a double by Flavell, and a single by Jones.

In the eighth inning Harvard won the game. Clark was hit by a pitched ball, and Wendell singled. After Devens struck out, Coolidge made a two base hit, scoring Clark. Stillman received a base on balls and Kendall was hit by a pitched ball. Reid then knocked a high fly just back of second base, which was allowed to fall untouched, scoring two more runs. The game ended without further scoring, Pennsylvania seeming to lose courage in the face of Harvard's lead.

Reid caught a very steady game and much better than he has of late. Coolidge showed great improvement in his hitting, but was erratic in his fielding. Wendell and Stillman also batted well. Stillman pitched a creditable game, though lacking his usual good control. For Pennsylvania Collier and Shape did most of the hitting. The infield had easy chances for the most part, and, except in the eighth inning played a good game.

The Pennsylvania team did not show quite as much fighting spirit as did the Harvard nine, though on bases they were slightly quicker to take opportunities.
