The nine lost a closely contested game to Brown Saturday afternoon through inability to hit Washburn. Not until three innings had been played did either side get a man to second base. In the fourth inning Harvard had a man on third and two men out. In the fifth and in the ninth innings the conditions were similar. Brown missed a chance to score in the fourth inning by Clark's attempt to score from first base on a single to centre field. In the seventh inning Brown again reached third base, but except for these two times not a Brown man reached second until the tenth inning.
The fielding was accurate on both sides and was as lively as could be expected, considering the cold weather. Harvard was very weak at the bat, and Brown showed no special strength until the tenth inning. An encouraging feature about Harvard's batting was that every man who reached first was advanced either by a hit or a sacrifice. Loughlin led Harvard's batting with two hits, but was put out both times through reckless base running. In the field, Coolidge and Kendall played the best game for Harvard. The feature of Brown's play was Captain Clark's batting, which was very nearly equalled by that of Detmers. Crane played well at third, accepting eight chances without an error. Until the tenth inning Stillman gave only one base on balls and kept Brown's hits well scattered; then he allowed a triple and three singles. Both pitchers were remarkably steady with men on bases.
In the tenth inning Crane, the first batter for Brown, singled to centre and stole second. The next two men were easily retired, but Bacon, who followed made a base hit which sent Crane to third. Bacon stole second and scored with Crane on Clark's three base hit to left field. Clark scored on G. C. Clark's wild throw of Barry's grounder. Detmers singled, but Wheeler struck out.
