The football team will play Bates on Soldiers Field at 4 o'clock this afternoon. Last year Harvard defeated Bates 29 to 0, but as Bates has only five men of last year's team left, and as the backs are all new men, the team is much weaker than it was last year. A week ago today Yale defeated Bates 50 to 0 in two short halves, so that a large score may be expected today.
The line-up will be as follows: Although the practice yesterday was better than on Monday, it was still far from satisfactory. No preliminary work was done, and after a short signal practice the first and second elevens played a game of thirty minutes. The first scored two touchdowns and kept the playing entirely in the second team's territory. The substitutes then played a short game, while the first eleven practiced plays and new formations. The first eleven had little trouble in gaining through the second and in stopping plays, but the unsteadiness of the line and fumbles kept the score down. The work of the backs in line-bucking showed the result of the recent coaching. The end runs, however, were poorly executed and the interference did not stick together. Their full strength was not represented, as Campbell, Lee, Graydon, and Daly did not play because of slight injuries, and Kendall played only a short time. Sawin was not on the field, as his injured knee prevents his doing any work. Hallowell did some kicking and went through the signal practice, but took no part in the actual playing. Burnett came out for the first time this year, and went through a little individual practice. Of the men who played in the game Ellis did the best work. He made steady gains by leaping over the line and by keeping his feet after being tackled. He was, however, very slow in interfering for the other backs. Kernan kept his feet better than usual and seemed to put more strength in his running. Although Jaynes was of some value to the interference, his running was very slow and he lost much ground by carrying the ball back on end runs. All the men in the line were unsteady, and Carroll and J. Lawrence were not active enough in keeping their opponents out of the plays. Eaton opened some good holes and was faster than usual. Morse and Cutts of the second eleven did some excellent tackling, and broke up several of the first team's plays. The first eleven scored its first touchdown three minutes after the game began; short gains through the line by Kernan, Ellis and Kendall and a run of twenty five yards by Kendall took the ball to the six yard line and Ellis carried it over the line on a plunge through right guard. J. Lawrence kicked the goal. The second touchdown was the indirect result of Mifflin's two failures to get the ball away on punts. He finally succeeded in punting and the first team got the ball on the twentyfive yard line. Several short gains by Jaynes and Kernan and two long plunges by Ellis made the touchdown. J. Lawrence again kicked the goal. Near the end of the game the first team rushed the ball to the twenty five yard line, and Kernan tried a goal from the field, but Sargent passed the ball back over his head, causing a loss of twenty yards. The game then ended. The final reduction of the squad will be made in a few days, and the game between the substitutes yesterday was in the nature of a test to help in the selection.
