Intercollegiate Chess

The intercollegiate chess tournament, held annually during the Christmas recess, will be played this year in New York, as usual, at the Columbia Grammar School, on 51st street, near Madison avenue. Play will begin on Christmas Day. No admission will be charged. Harvard, Yale, Columbia and Princeton will be represented respectively as follows.

Harvard--W. Catchings '01, and E. R. Perry '03. Substitutes, C. T. Rice '01, F. E. Thayer '00 S.

Yale L. A. Cook '00, and J. M. Morgan '02. Substitute, E. B. Adams '02.

Columbia K. G. Falk '01, and F. H. Sewall '02. Substitute, H. A. Boehm '00.

Princeton J. C. Henley '02, and J. B. Hunt '02. Substitute, C. W. Scott '02.

The chess trophy, a silver punchbowl, was first offered in 1891, and will become the property of the university winning it for ten successive years. Harvard has already won it five times in succession. For the last three years Harvard has won ten points out of twelve. The lowest score which ever won the tournament was eight and one-half points, made by Harvard in 1895.

Neither Southard nor Arensberg, who composed last year's winning team, has come out this year. The absence of Southard makes the tournament closer and more interesting than it has been for several years. His playing was far above the average, as is shown by the fact that he won twenty-two games in succession for Harvard. Catchings, the president of the Chess Club, was substitute on the team last year and also played in the international match. Perry, who won the fall tournament, played on the Worcester Academy team last year, and has made a good showing against prominent eastern players. Rice, first substitute, has shown marked improvement this fall. He won from Pillsbury in the recent simultaneous exhibition. The Harvard players have received excellent coaching from E. E. Southard and from various members of the Boston Chess Club.

Columbia has lost Meyer, who was probably next to Southard in playing ability. Falk is very conservative, and seldom makes more than a draw against a good player. Sewall is hardly as good as Boehm, who is unable to play on account of illness. Both the Yale and the Princeton teams are better than they were last year. Weston and Ely, last year's players, were beaten in the fall tournament by Henley and Hunt, the present team.

The summary of previous tournaments is as follows:   H.  C.  Y.  P. 1893,  7  8 1/2  5  3 1/2 1894,  9  3  6  6 1895,  8 1/2  8  3 1/2  4 1896,  10  4 1/2  4  5 1/2 1897,  10  6 1/2  4 1/2  3 1898,  10  8 1/2  2 1/2  3
