A large number of new men were present at the first meeting of the Chess Club last evening. Inasmuch as several of last year's most prominent players will not take an active part in the work of the organization this year, it is necessary that the vacancies be filled by new men. The preliminary tournament will begin next week. Blue-books have been placed at Leavitt's and at Sanborn's where entries may be made by any member of the University wishing to compete. Entries will close Oct. 11.
The following officers have been elected: President, W. Catchings '01; secretary, A. Michelson '01; treasurer, J. O. Carson '02.
