LAFAYETTE, 8; HARVARD, 1.

'Varsity Defeated in a Five Inning Game. Called on Account of Rain.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Yesterday afternoon the Harvard nine was defeated by Lafayette on Soldiers Field by the score of 8 to 1 in a five inning game. Only five innings were played as a cold drizzling rain fell continuously rendering the ball very slippery and difficult to control. McCornick was put in the box in order to save the regular pitchers, and showed his lack of practice by pitching an ineffective game. Nevins, on the other hand, pitched effectively, striking out seven men and allowing but three hits and these scattered. Lafayette's hits on the other hand were timely, and Walbridge's three bagger in the second inning brought in three runs. In the last inning Harvard had three men on bases, but Burgess struck out, retiring the side. On the whole the 'Varsity played decidedly loose baseball.
