In the first game in the class baseball series, played on the 'Varsity diamond yesterday, Ninety-nine defeated Ninety-eight by the score of twelve to seven. The game, though somewhat loosely played by both sides, was marked by several brilliant plays by Ninety-nine, and up to the sixth inning, when the Juniors scored five runs, was decidedly interesting. Both Ely and Cochrane gave many bases on balls, but the latter steadied down and pitched effectively for the last three innings. Ely, however, was replaced by Vincent in the seventh inning.
In the first inning Haskell and Vincent each scored for the Seniors. The Juniors tied the score in the next inning; Nowell got his base on balls, McCall reached first on an error by Kimball, and both these men scored on a two-bagger by Jaffray. In the third inning the Seniors secured three runs, making the score five to two in their favor. Ninety-nine, in the fourth inning, added two more runs by errors on the part of Ninety-eight.
In the fifth Vincent was thrown out at first by Nowell. Sterling's hot grounder was superbly fielded by Holden who also made a good assist of Goodridge's ball.
Ninety-nine in the next inning seemed to hit Ely at will scoring five runs in all. Vincent then went in to pitch and Abbott was put at third in his place.
In the last inning Ninet-eight scored one more run. Dibblee and Holden did the best individual work for the Juniors and Vincent did well for Ninety-eight.
The team batted in the following order:
Juniors. Seniors.
Jameson, c. f. 2b., Haskell.
Thompson, r. f. s. s., McVey.
Dibblee, 3b. c. f., Sterling.
Cochrane, p. l. f., Goodridge.
Nowell, s. s. 1b., Bouve.
Holden, 2b. c., Ring.
McCall, 1. f. r. f., Kimball.
Jaffray, 1b. c., Vincent.
Whitbeck, c. p., Ely.
3b., Abbott.
The score by innings:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Ninety-nine, 0 2 0 2 2 5 0 1 0-12
Ninety-eight, 2 0 3 0 0 1 0 0 1-7
