NEW HAVEN, CONN., Jan. 13, 1898.- The Yale Boating officers through Captain Payne Whitney have sent the following in reply to Cornell's letter of Tuesday concerning Yale's challenge:

DEAR SIR:- It has been and is our earnest desire that Cornell accept our invitation to row at New London this year, and we regret that in your reply of the 11th inst. a condition is imposed which we are unable to accept.
