The Freshman nine defeated Yale 1900 at New Haven Saturday by a score of seven to two. On account of the spring regatta at Lake Whitney the attendance at the game was rather small, but about twenty-five Freshmen accompanied the Harvard team to New Haven, and by their vigorous cheering encoraged the team considerably.
The game was pretty well played throughout, but the Yale team was clearly outfielded and outbatted. McCornick's pitching, though somewhat wild at times, was, on the whole, very effective. He struck out seven men, and, except in the sixth, allowed no two of the five hits made off him to be made in the same inning. He also fielded his position well, and two of his assists were difficult stops of high bounding grounders.
Yale scored in the first inning on a base on balls, a passed ball, a stolen base, and an error by McCornick. In the third inning, however, Harvard took the lead. Loughlin, the first man up, knocked a pretty home run between right and centre. Then, with two men up, Egbert got a base on balls and went to second on McCornick's grounder, which was fumbled by Norton. Farrington followed with a short hit, advancing Egbert and McCornick to third and second respectively, and then Foster made a single, sending in two runs.
No more runs were made until the sixth inning, when each side scored one. Ewer got to first on an error, stole second, went to third on a long fly to the outfield and scored on Lewis' hit. Yale made her second run in this inning on two hits and a stolen base.
The last scoring was done in the seventh. Egbert got to first on a base on balls, going to third on McCornick's twobase hit. Farrington flied out, and the next three batters-Foster, Edmunds and Ewer-followed with single, sending in three runs.
The last work for Yale was done by Sullivan and Norton.
