The men in the Mott Haven squad are now training for the class games to be held April 8. A rough estimate of the records made by men who will compete indicates that the chief contest will be between the Seniors and the Sophomores. The Wells Cup, in competition for which the class games are held annually, has been won by '97 for three years in succession. If they win it again this year it will go to them permanently.
Today the sprinters will be tried for a hundred yards, the weather permitting. The times made in this trial will partially aid the captains of the class teams in selecting the men to run in the 100 and 220 yards dashes in the games.
The following men have been appointed class captains: W. H. Vincent '97, F. H. Bigelow '98, W. G. Morse '99, E. D. Gould 1900.
Next week strict training will begin for the whole squad. The candidates will meet at 8 o'clock every morning to take a short walk before breakfast. After the 'Varsity scratch games on April 15 the team will be given a rest for a week. The most promising men will be called back during the Easter recess and part of them taken to the training table.
The same rules will govern the class games that have been in force heretofore. The following are the more important points:
The points shall be counted as follows: A first prize, five points; a second prize, three points; a third prize one point.
These games are open to undergraduates and special students of undergraduate departments.
Each captain shall furnish the secretary of the H. A. A. with a list of his entries four days before the games.
The drawing for the heats shall be done by the 'varsity captain and the captains of the class teams.
Each class shall be limited to four entries in the dashes, hurdles, and walk; to three in the other events.
The 440 yards run shall be run in one heat if there are not more than ten starters, otherwise four men shall constitute a heat.
No two men of a class shall compete in a heat unless necessary to complete the heat.
