Harvard Scholarships.

The income of the scholarships under the charge of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences amounts this year to $42,330. Of this sum, $25,880 has been awarded to undergraduates, $12,250 to graduates and $4,200 to the Lawrence Scientific School. This amount plus the Price Greenleaf Fund and the Beneficiary Funds comes to about $43,000 for the present year.

In making an assignment of a scholarship under the present system, the facts considered are the needs of the student and his promise as indicated by his work in College. A student not in need of aid can not honorably apply for a scholarship, nor can a scholarship be awarded to one who from physical, mental or moral weakness, gives little promise of future usefulness.

Scholarships are ordinarily awarded to men in the three upper classes, on the basis of the previous year's work. No student who has incurred a serious college censure in the course of the year will be considered a candidate for scholarship, and no student who obtains leave of absence for the year in which the scholarship would be payable can be considered a candidate for a scholarship.

There are 196 scholarships available for the next year, of which 115 are assigned to the College, 54 to the Graduate School and 27 to the Lawrence Scientific School. The annual sums vary from $40 to $450.

All applications for these scholarships should be addressed to the Dean of Harvard College and must be deposited at the Recorder's office, No. 4 University Hall on or before the 26th of May. Blanks may be obtained at the Recorder's office.

In addition there is awarded each year between $14,000 and $16,000, the income of the Price Greenleaf Fund. This amount is awarded in sums of from $100 to $250 a year, to undergraduates in the first year of their residence, and to deserving students who have not succeeded in competition for scholarships.

To secure an assignment for a first year student, the applicant must be strongly recommended by the college, academy or school with which he has been connected. The applications must be in the hands of the Secretary of the University by May 1.

Under the the name of the Beneficiary Funds, about $1,800 is annually distributed in quantities of not more than $50 each.

Applications should be addressed to the Dean of the College by the student's parents or guardian, or by the student himself, if of age. There is also a Loan Fund, the interest of which amounts annually to about $3,000.
