The Columbia Crew.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

At a recent meeting of the Columbia Athletic Union which controls Columbia athletics, it was finally decided that Columbia will have a crew this year. This change of position was undoubtedly the result of an enthusiastic mass meeting of undergraduates and alumni held last week at which the proposal to give up a crew for this year was unanimously condemned.

With this support behind them, the undergraduate members of the Athletic Union made a vigorous stand for a crew. The sentiment of the majority of the Union finally became so strong for the crew that three prominent graduate officers of the Union who had been very much opposed to having a crew handed in their resignations. Their resignations were accepted and it was then unanimously voted to have a crew.

Nearly $6000 has been promised for the support of the crew and enough more can probably be raised not only to cover all expenses but also to meet the debt of $3000 left by the '96 'varsity crew.
