RACE OF THE TRIAL EIGHTS.

J. H. Perkins's Crew Wins by Barely 1-4 of a Length.

The race of the trial eights on Saturday was won by J. H. Perkins's crew by a short quarter of a length. From the start until the line was crossed the result was in doubt. One hundred yards from the finish both crews were even and going strongly. The superior leg drive of Perkins's crew, however, and the fact that they had a little more spurt left gave them the victory. The time, roughly taken, was 9m. 51s. The conditions were fairly good. The tide was going out slightly and a light wind gave the water just sufficient life.

At 10.45, Mr. Lehmann gave the word to start from the launch. Both crews got away quickly, although Goodrich's men had a slight advantage. This lead they increased to a full length at the bridge. At this point, Blake was rowing about 35 strokes to the minute while Higginson had his stroke run up to 39 from the start. Both crews were rowing pluckily and in fairly good form. About a quarter of a mile below the bridge, Plumb called on Higginson for a spurt. The latter responded prettily. He was answered by Blake who also ran up the stroke a couple of points. Perkins's crew began to get together in good shape at this point and gradually cut down the lead of the other boat. An eighth of a mile from the line it was nose and nose. Now one crew had the lead, now the other. Coleman who rowed in Goodrich's boat unfortunately slipped his stretcher but kept on pluckily in time with the rest. Very gradually and by the hardest kind of driving Perkins's men finally lifted their boat ahead, crossing the finish line just eight feet before Capt. Goodrich's crew.

The launch "John Harvard" followed the race, having on board: Mr. Lehmann, Mr. Willis, Francis Peabody '79, J. J. Storrow '85, E. C. Storrow, G. S. Mumford '85, Dr. Coolidge, Geo. Von Utassy and G. D. Marvin '99.
