The second in the course of lectures on Buddhism by Professor Lanman will be given this evening at 8 o'clock in the lecture room of the Fogg Art Museum.
The following is an abstract of the lecture:
1. The Doctrine or Dhamma.- Popular pessimism and belief in transmigration.- The "Three Characteristics": transitoriness, misery, lack of substantive reality (anniccam, dukkham, anattam).- Karma and rebirth.- Meditation and Nirvana.
2. The practical and the theoretical aspects of the system-Story of the "spiritual attainments."- Dialogue between The Blessed One and the Son of Malunkya (religion versus dogma).
3. Ancient specimens of Buddhist teaching.- The conversion of Kassapa.- The Dhaniya Sutta.- The parabolic teaching.- The Jatakas.- The goose that laid the golden egg.- The tar baby, etc.
4. Folk-lore tales illustrated from ancient sculptures.- The Wheel as symbol of the Doctrine.
