Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
Whereas our late fellow student, Abel Maynard Rice, just as he was finishing his scholastic preparation for the great work of the Christian ministry, was taken from our midst by death-an event which seemed untimely, inasmuch as he was called from the field while entering it full of hope, and equipped with a liberal education, a sympathetic appreciation of the highest and noblest, and an ambitious spirit to best serve his day and generation; and,
Whereas, by his manly bearing, kindly disposition, studious search for truth, and his loyalty to the high ideals of the moral life-the qualities of a genuine religious nature, he had enshrined himself in the esteem and affection of his professors and fellow students at Harvard University as well as at the Meadville Theological School; and
Whereas we recognize a closer tie which bound him to father, mother and other loved ones and which was peremptorily severed in that the familiar face and voice greet them no more; therefore be it.
Resolved, That on behalf of the Harvard Divinity School we give forth this expression of our grief and sense of loss in the departure of our brother, and trust that his sterling worth and strong moral character may be an inspiration to courageous living and unselfish service to all who have known him; and,
Resolved, That we deeply sympathize with the bereaved family and friends of our brother, and would commend them to the Divine Life which was the thought and inspiration of his life, and which speaks to them and to all the consolation that "he being dead, yet liveth."
Resolved, That these resolutions appear in the HARVARD CRIMSON and the Christian Register, and a copy be sent to the family of the deceased.
