Yesterday afternoon the 'varsity football practice was especially noticeable for the remarkably suappy game which the men indulged in. This was due entirely to the vigorous coaching of Waters and Newell, who were dressed in football clothes, and to the presence of Lewis, Emmons, Mackie, Brewer and Gardner. These coaches kept the men working hard the whole afternoon either at kicking and catching the ball or at breaking through the line.
After the preliminary practice had been indulged in, the first and second elevens lined up against each other for two short halves. Captain Wrightington was not dressed to play. Bouve, who played on the '98 team in his freshman year, and Dayton '99, last year's freshman halfback, appeared on the field for the first time.
The ends still seemed to be the weakest points in the line for time and time again they allowed the backs to make gains after long punts had been made. Neither Wheeler nor Shaw have yet been placed in the line as they are not yet in good physical condition. Cabot and Beale again returned to the first eleven and played at full back and quarter back respectively.
The first and second elevens lined up as follows:

Richardson, r. e. r. e., E. H. Davis.
Swain, r. t. r. t., Coleman.
Jaffrey, r. g. r. g., Burden.
