Last evening the following members of the class elevens of last year met in Captain Wrightington's room to elect captains: '97, Hallowell, Ladd, Rantoul, Fenno, Warren, Fitzgerald; '98, Bouve, Flint, Wadsworth, Manning, Bull, Burrage, Marvin, Knox, Curtis, Rice and Cozzens; '99, Haughton, Johnston, Fairbanks, Farley, Homans, Adams, Holden and Dayton.
E. L. Rantoul was elected captain of '97, C. B. Manning of '98 and J. W. Farley of '99. This is Rantoul's second year as captain and his third on the team at right end. Before coming to Harvard he played end on Hopkinson's championship team. He weighs about 155 pounds and is a hard and conscientious player.
Manning was a substitute on his freshman team, and last year he played back on '98. He learned his football at Andover. He weighs about 150 pounds, is a fair kicker and a good line breaker.
Farley played quarterback on last year's Freshman team. Before entering the University he played on Roxbury Latin. He weighs about 158 pounds and is a hard tackler. Last year '97 won the championship largely upon their tackle plays and on Hallowell's punting. They should have a strong team this year.
Last year's '98 team was strong on offensive work but the line was comparatively weak. This year they should also have a strong line, judging from the number of excellent linemen now with the 'Varsity squad, such as Hoague, Hennen, Seaver, Marvin and Woodward. Farley will have hard work to make a good team as many of last year's eleven are now with the 'Varsity. Haughton, Lloyd, Cochrane and Richardson will be much missed. There are, however, a number of good substitutes to take their places. '97 starts work this afternoon on Soldiers Field, and '99 begins Wednesday. Captain Manning has not yet issued a call for candidates but will undoubtedly have them out some time this week.
