The finals in the tennis tournament were played yesterday afternoon on the Carey court between H. Ward 1900 and R. H. Carleton '98, and resulted in a victory for Ward after a hard five set match.
Both men ran up to the net on their service and the volleying was very swift and for the most part fairly accurate. Carleton drove beautifully throughout and if he had been stronger in his smashing, the result might have been different. Ward volleyed particularly well and his lobs were all well back in the court, which drove Carleton from the net.
The match, without doubt was one of the best played and most exciting which has taken place in the University for years, and until the very last it was doubtful who would win.
The match in the semi-finals of the doubles was also played yesterday between C. C. Stillman '98 and F. Sterling '98 and H. Lavarack '99 and H. H. Shaw '99, the latter winning in a close three set match.
This afternoon at 2 o'clock Ward will play E. R. Marvin '99 for the championship of the University.
The summary is as follows:
H. Ward 1900 beat R. H. Carleton '98, 7-5, 3-6, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4.
H. Laverack '99 and H. H. Shaw '99 beat C. C. Stillman '98 and F. Sterling '98, 10-8, 5-7, 6-2.
