Harvard Beats Dartmouth 3 to 2 in an Uninteresting Game.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The 'varsity nine played only two games during the recess, one with Dartmouth on Thursday and the other with Tufts on Saturday. In both games Harvard was defeated. The game which was to have been played with Dartmouth in Hanover was cancelled on account of the failure of the Harvard nine to make the railroad connections.

The game on Thursday was played in Manchester and was close and exciting.

The Harvard team played in very hard luck; their fielding was generally good and their batting hard, but Dartmouth's few hits all counted for runs. For Harvard, Winslow and Stevenson played well in the infield while Hayes made some good catches. Highlands pitched a steady and effective game and Scannell caught him well. For Dartmouth the battery did excellent work and McCormack made two home runs. The score:

In the game with Tufts on Holmes Field last Saturday Harvard was defeated by the score of 11 to 7. The game was fairly won; it was slow throughout. Harvard's fielding was poor, Hayes having two errors out of five chances.

Paine pitched wildly and unsteadily for seven innings, he gave six men bases on balls, hit one, and allowed thirteen hits. Highlands pitched well during the last two innings; only six men facing him in that time.

Scannell caught well, although he made a poor throw in the second which gave Tufts a run. Stevenson had only three chances at first base, and did not bat well.

The Tufts team played very well. They made only two errors. Corridan especially did good work at short stop.

The game started by Paine's giving Corridan a base on balls and letting him get to second on an error. Corridan, however, did not score because Foss got out on a foul which Scannell caught, and Johnston and McGuire struck out.

In the second, Tufts scored twice owing to a base on balls and errors. Harvard scored twice on two singles and a two base hit.

Tufts' three runs in the seventh inning were due to Paine's giving McGuire and Smith bases on balls, which were followed by two single hits of Johnston and Richardson, and Hayes's fumble of an easy fly to centre field.

Groton, 9; Harvard '98, 8.The freshman nine was defeated by the Groton team on the grounds of the latter Saturday afternoon. With the score 7 to 6 in their favor at the end of the eighth inning, it looked like victory for the Harvard nine. But in their half of the ninth the Groton men took a big brace and won. The features of the game were the pitching of Cozzens and Haughton, the former having 15 strikeouts to his credit. Haughton's batting was excellent. He is easily the mainstay of Groton's team. The Harvard freshmen showed their lack of coaching.
