Football.

Hardly a day now passes without some player being injured. Yesterday Hallowell sprung a cartilage over his ribs in a scrimmage, and had to leave the game. While the accident is not a serious one, it will lay Hallowell off for a week, and the eleven in its present state can ill afford to lose his services.

Gonterman and Whittren made their first appearance with the squad yesterday afternoon. The former contented himself with a long run, but Whittren went to end on the second eleven and played throughout the game. Waters was out again but did not play. Captain Emmons, for the first time since his injury, joined the eleven a short while in practicing interference.

The practice game lasted 30 minutes. Lewis, Williard, Upton, Crosby, Deland, Waters and Captain Emmons did the coaching and Mr. Lathrop and Dr. Porter saw that none of the men got too much work.

The practice was not very satisfactory. Most of the attention of the coaches was paid to the interference and team work. The playing was erratic. At times the interference on end plays was splendid, but again it was very loose and ragged. Hayes made several long runs round the right end, aided by some of the best interference seen this season. When the left end was tried it was seldom that the backs could put Whittren effectually out of the play, and time after time he broke through the blockers and brought the runner down.

The line played loosely, but aggressively. The 'varsity had the ball most of the time and their work was almost entirely on the offensive. Wrenn and Borden were both tried at quarterback with about equal success. The 'varsity scored three times.

After the 'varsity practice the second eleven lined up against the '95 eleven for a short game. Both elevens played extremely poor football.
