Baseball.

A shut-out by Holy Cross on our own grounds ought to mark the lowest ebb of our baseball for this year. Of course the team was all shaken up and the men were unused to their position, yet the five errors that were made, bad as they were, were not the worst feature of the game. By good pitching the Holy Cross men were held down to two runs, and, by any ordinary playing, the 'varsity would easily have beaten out this score, but their aggressive work was simply lifeless. They lost a chance to score in the first with two men on bases and no one out, and, from that time on, they went to sleep. Toward the close of the game, they realized that something was needed, but seemed unable to throw any vigor into their play. However, probably no one, more than the nine, recognize their poor showing and every effort can be expected from them to better matters.

Mason made his first appearance with the nine this year and received a small ovation from the small crowd present. Cook is apparently too high up on the batting list. However, good he may be in other situations, when a hit is particularly needed, he seems almost always to weaken. This defect has been noticeable in a number of previous games, and was made conspicuous in the first inning yesterday.

NINETY-FOUR 5; NINETY SIX 1.If the freshmen hope to win in Saturday's game with Princeton '96, they must play far different ball than they played in yesterday's game with the juniors. They were thoroughly outclassed at every point. How in the world they expect to score with four scattered hits, or to prevent their opponents from scoring, when they make ten errors, is difficult to understand. Every man in the infield made one or more errors. The worst feature of all was the base running. A stranger to the game would not have known that any such thing as coaching was allowable. This criticism may sound a little unfair in the face of the praise that has been bestowed upon the freshman nine for most of the season, but anybody who was present at the game will not question the truth and justice of all that is here said against them.

The juniors, however, played good ball throughout, Hapgood made three hits with a total of four, and one sacrifice hit in five times at bat. In the field, Linfield did as usual the best work, accepting six chances without an error. This is his third consecutive game at short stop without an error. Not a single run was made.
