Freshman Eleven.

Now that the game at Springfield is a thing of the past, the interest in football is all centered in the outcome of the freshman game next Saturday. As the men coming from the 'varsity squad will change, to a large extent, the make up of the eleven it will be impossible to expect much team-work by the end of the week.

Yesterday afternoon the final practice began in earnest, all the men from the 'varsity elevens were out, and playing hard. Almost the entire 'varsity team were out to coach the men and before the afternoon was over, the beneficial effects of their coaching were apparent. Lewis was out to coach the centres, and Waters the guards. Trafford. Lake, and Lee kept an eye on the backs, and Newell and Hallowell watched the tackles and ends.

Fairchild captained the team which lined up as follows: 1. e. Foster; 1. t. J. Shea; 1. g. Worden; c. Russell; r. g. Rice; r. t. Clark; r. e. A. Brewer; q. b. Fairchild; halves, Arnold and Hamlin; full back, Fennessy. At the outset the play was anything but encouraging. The men all played in a listless half-hearted way, until the coaches braced them up thoroughly. For the end of the season, however, there was too little snap, and a great ignorance of some of the points which should have been learned at the beginning of the year. The centre men break through fairly well but do not know what to do. In defence they not only fail to have a firm position, but do not even watch their opponents. With such men as Hickok and McCrea against them, the centre men have a tremendous amount to accomplish, to make a respectable showing.

The tackles know their positions better, and played a hard, stiff game all the time. They both keep their eyes on the ball pretty well, and in blocking off and tacking show an energetic spirit. Foster's experience on the varsity will make that side of the line fairly strong. On the other end Brewer works hard but needs considerable coaching yet. At quarter, Fairchild will have a chance to get a lot of life into the men, besides using his knowledge in making the men do all they are capable of doing. The three ba+++ks will be the strongest part of the team. As soon as Brewer gets rested, Fennessy, and Arnold or Hamlin will give him good support. Arnold is quick on his feet but a little unsteady in holding the ball. Fennessy is in every play, and always get in his kick. Man nahan was first tried on the second at guard, and, although tackle is his regular place, played all round his man, and was put on the first for a trial.
