The Springfield Game.

In view of the rumors that the annual game between Harvard and Yale will fall through this year, the following statement from Walter Camp, the Yale coach, is to the point:

"It is both interesting and assuring in the present state of affairs in football circles, and particularly as both Yale and Harvard graduates are becoming anxious as to the Springfield match, to review the Harvard-Yale agreement, and set their minds at rest as far as possible. This agreement made by the four gentlemen whose names are subscribed, at Springfield, Oct. 20, 1891, reads as follows:

SPRINGFIELD, Oct. 20; 1891.

We the undersigned, representing the football associations of Harvard and Yale respectively, do hereby agree to play a game of football annually in the years from 1891 to 1897 inclusive. The game in each year shall be played at Hampden Park, Springfield, Mass. The date of the game in each year shall be the Saturday immediately preceding Thanksgiving Day. The games shall be played under the playing rules of the American Intercollegiate Football Association. In the years from 1892 to 1894, inclusive, a meeting shall be held between the captains of the two elevens on or before Oct. 15, at which a referee and an umpire shall be selected and all matters not covered by this agreement shall be decided. For the year 1891 the referee and umpire shall be selected as soon as may be by mutual consent of the captains of the two elevens.

Hinkey in power, there is almost no chance whatever of the game falling through. Both these captains want a game, not an argument.

In spite of the bugbear raised that Yale would try to force Harvard to play under the new undergraduate rule regarding eligibility, there has been, I have been assured, no suggestion of the kind between the two managements, and in the existence of the above agreement Capt. Hinkey and Capt. Waters will meet to settle by mutual consent all points not specifically covered. Such a meeting will take place this week, as it must come on or before October 15.
