Denied Winter Campus Housing, International Students Scramble to Find Alternative Options
The Harvard Chess and Whist Club has received a letter from Mr. E. A. Caswell Yale '66, stating that the subscriptions for the Challenge Chess Cup have been completed and that the designs will be finished by the first of February. The cup will be owned by Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Columbia, and will be played for every year in a tournament to be held in New York during the Christmas vacation. Mr. Caswell suggests that immediate action be taken. The first tournament will doubtless be played next winter. A meeting of the Harvard Chess Club will be held tonight to discuss and amend the following rules offered by Mr. Caswell:
1. The tournament shall be held publicly in New York City during the winter holiday vacation.
2. Each of the four colleges shall be represented by three undergraduates of whom at least one shall be in the regular academic department.
3. Each representative shall play with each of the representatives of colleges other than his own, the college winning the most games to be champion, and ties to be played off.
4. The receipts from the tournament to be used first in providing medals for winners, allowance for expenses of visiting teams and any balance to be divided, one half to the winning club and one-half equally between the remaining three clubs.
5. The cup to remain in the possession of the winning club subject to challenge on or before June 1st, preceding the December competition. The reception of a later challenge to be at the option of the holder.
6. If the cup shall remain for ten successive years in possession of the club of any one college it shall become its property.
7. These conditions to remain in force for five successive years including 1896. after which the further management of the tournament shall be in the hands of a committee of four graduates, one from each college, or of as many as there may be colleges remaining in the contest.
Below is a copy of Mr. Caswell's letter:
NEW YORK, Jan. 15, 1892.Secretary of the Harvard Chess Club,
DEAR SIR:-
The competitive designs for the chess cup will be handed in by Feb. 1st, and the award made soon after. Meanwhile I shall try to send you the different sets of rules under which the recent tournaments have been played, so that you take into consideration the various points and offer suggestions concerning them. The especial points which the committee are thinking over are whether one or more candidates should come from any special department, also how many games should be played. It wants as broad a representation as possible and a good sure test.
E. A. CASWELL.
