The first indoor open handicap games of the First Regiment Athletic Association were held in the South Armory, Boston, Saturday evening. An unusually large number of Harvard men entered, and the showing they made in all the contests reflected credit on the H. A. A. and upon Mr. Lathrop.
The first event of the evening, and perhaps the most entertaining was the 75 yard dash. In this event there were ninety-seven entries, forty-seven of whom were Harvard men, and twenty-two heats. The final was won by N. W. Bingham, Jr, '95, (11 feet), in 8 seconds, with E. B. Bloss '95, a very close second. Bloss was given one foot handicap, but in all his heats ran from the scratch. The winners of the heats were as follows: First heat, E. B. Bloss '94 (scratch) first; F. W. Lord, B. A. A. (13 feet) second. Time 4 5-5 sec; second heat, G. F. Brown, Jr. '92, (4 feet) first; W. G. In the mile run Harvard men were too heavily handicapped. This event was won by W. H. Allison, W. A. C. (20 yds) first; J. M. Gallagher, W. A. C. (55 yds.) second. Time 4 m., 42 4-5 secs.
The mile walk brought out a large number of men and was won by M. J. Doyle, Boston, (20 secs.) first, with M. A. Beaudette, W. A. C. (25 secs.) second in 7 min. 55 1-5 secs. A. L. Endicott '94 was scratch in this event.
The 440 yards dash was run in three heats, of which the second was entirely composod of Harvard men. The final heat was the most closely contested event of the evening and was won by R. M. Reynolds, Fall River Y. M. C. A. (60 yds) first; G. L. Batchelder '92 (4 yds.) second. Time 55 4-5 secs.
The 220 yds. hurdle race was won by T. Richardson '95 (4 yds.) Time 30 1-5 secs.
W. H. Shea 92, was the only Harvard man entered in putting the shot and he the event with one foot handicap. He also made the best actual put, 37 feet, 10 in.
For first place in the pole vault, J. E. Morse, B. A. A. (12 inches) and E. W. Kingsley, W. A. C. (8 inches) were tied ten feet; Morse, however, won first in the toss.
The running high jump was won by S. M. Merrill '95 (3 in.) at 5 feet, 9 7-8 in.; second, P. C. Stinzel, Boston, (2 in.) 5 feet 7 3-4 in.; third, J. E. Morse, B. A. A. (scratch) 5 feet, 6 7-8 in.
There were five other events in which no Harvard men were entered.
