Yesterday's game was one of the most interesting played here for a long time. The batting on neither side was hard, but enough men got to first to make the game exciting. Several remarkable pretty plays were made and the Lovells were just prevented from scoring time and time again. The game was Harvard's from the start, but a shut-out for the visitors seemed very improbable. Every man on the Harvard team played with a great deal of snap, and the four errors which were made were generally retrieved. Hovey was especially wide awake at short, accepting all his chances finely. Bates pitched a good game, though wild at times. Upton caught well, but was weak in throwing to bases. Trafford led at the bat, making a fine home run in the first inning, and a beautiful single in the fifth. Dean got to first three times, and on each occasion distinguished himself by his lively base running.
In the first inning only brilliant playing prevented Lovell's nine from scoring. Rudderham got to first on a muff by Frothingham. O'Brien followed with a clean single past second base. Fitz knocked a grounder to Hovey, who threw quickly to Cook. The latter had plenty of time to put out Rudderham, who was forced from second, but he neglected to touch the base. With three men on bases Gardner knocked a fly to Hovey, who fielded it to Cook in time to catch Rudderham before he could get back to his base. Carleton now came to the bat. O'Brien stole third, and Fitz second. There was still a good chance for a run until Fitz was caught napping, Again in the second inning a man was left on third. In the eighth and ninth the Lovells made desperate efforts to score. Lyons got to first on Cook's wild throw of his grounder, and tried to get second; but Frothingham ran in behind first, fielded the ball prettily to Hovey, and Lyons was out. Then McKeever made a fine hit to centre. A wild pitch advanced him to second, and Rudderham's hit took him to third. O'Brien knocked a long fly to Frothingham, who made a beautiful assist to the plate, and prevented McKeever from scoring. It was one of the prettiest and most exciting double plays of the year. In the ninth Fitz made a base hit, stole second and got third on a wild pitch before any one was out. Gardner struck out. Carleton knocked a grounder to Bates who threw to catch Fitz. Cook threw to Upton, who ran Fitz down between third and the plate. Carleton meanwhile got to second, and the next man at the bat got his base on balls, but McLaughlin fouled out, and both were left.
Our runs were made in the first and fifth. In the first Dean was hit by a pitched ball, stole second and third, and came in on Trafford's home run. Hallowell had likewise been hit, and also scored. In the fifth Dean led off with a base hit, stole second, and came home on Hallowell's sacrifice, and Trafford's second hit. Trafford himself came home on an error and Alward's hit. Frothingham got two bases on Carleton's error, and he also came home on Alward's hit. This ended the scoring for the game.
