Captain Dean went to Springfield yesterday to arrange the dates of the Harvard-Yale games with Captain Calhoun of the Yale nine. Bates '91 had charge of the candidates for the nine. He had the men out on Jarvis field and a short game was played between two nines made up as follows: First nine-Mason, c.; Wiggin, p.; Dickinson, 1b.; Frothingham '93, 2b.; Brown '92, 3b.; Soule, s. s.; Mackie, Hallowell and Bates in the field. Second nine-Guerin, c.; Spalding and Veazie, p.; Trafford and Howe, 1b.; Wood, 2b.; Cook, 3b.; Chase, s. s.; Frothingham '94, Corbett and Neff in the field. The field was wet and slippery, so the play was about as bad as it could be. But it is out door work that the men need, and Captain Dean is very fortunate to get his men out so early this year.
The candidates for the Yale nine have been working steadily in the cage and will probably begin out door work next week. There is good material for all positions except that of pitcher. The men who are trying for this place are all inexperienced; they are Wilson, Case, Stewart and Ridgway. Case seems to be the most promising man; he pitched for the Phillips Andover nine last year. The make-up of the team, aside from the position of pitcher, right field, first base and short stop, will be as follows: Catchers, Poole and Kedzie; second base, Calhoun; third base, Owsley; left field, Norman McClintock; centre field, Murphy. The positions in doubt will be filled immediately. The nine will leave New Haven for the annual Easter trip on March 25. Six games will be played during the trip.
