The Harvard Rifles. To the Editors of the Crimson:

The Harvard Rifles should, and doubtless will have even better success, more hearty support, this year than last. For the new members of the University a few words about its organization and work will be of interest.

The company was organized last year under the command of Lieutenant Robinson who was appointed by the government to give military drill at Harvard. The uniform is the undress gray cadet uniform, the same as is worn at West Point.

At first the men are put through the "setting up exercises," -general body exercises. This will be particularly appreciated this fall while the gymnasium is closed. Besides the routine marching and training in the manual of arms, there is drill in marching, skirmish practice, presentation of colors, and the like. If enough men join the company there will also be signalling by flag and heliostat. In the spring there is rifle practice, the government providing ammunition and targets.

Competitive drills are incentives to hard drilling. Last year there was a competitive drill with the Technology Cadet Battalion; and this year, if enough men join, there may be drills with Yale and Brown also.

Everything is done to make the drills interesting and instructive to the men. It is hoped that many men will join the company. The only expense connected with it is the price of the uniform, which is very moderate. Men may join at any time. The time set for drill,- Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7 to 8,- need not interfere, because Lieutenant Robinson is anxious to have it whenever the men may say.
