With seven men rowing for the last two miles Yale got over the course in 20 minutes and 17 seconds. This time is very fast under any conditions with eight men. The record for Yale crews over the New Haven course is something like 20 min. 9 sec. Atalanta rowed much the same kind of a race against Yale as Bradford rowed against Harvard last year for a shorter distance. At the half mile they were two-thirds of a length ahead, rowing 33 a minute to 31 for Yale. At the mile point there was clear water between the boats and Yale was ahead. The rather extraordinary thing about the race is that the stroke of the college crew broke his oar and jumped overboard at the two mile point, but the Atalantas could not catch up, but fell behind more rapidly than before.
